A day trip to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an unforgettable experience. It's Tanzania's famed caldera, a collapsed volcano, forming a massive wildlife sanctuary teeming with diverse animal species.
- 06:00Pick-up in Arusha. The road climbs past Maasai villages and the Rift Valley escarpment to the crater rim.
- MorningFrom the rim viewpoint the whole crater opens up below. The road down to the floor takes about 45 minutes.
- On the crater floorGame drive across the floor, one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa: lions, buffalo, elephants, zebra, wildebeest, hyenas, jackals and, with luck, black rhino.
- LunchPicnic lunch near the hippo pool, with hippos in the water a short way off.
- AfternoonMore game driving, including the Ngoitokitok spring, a permanent water source for the crater's animals.
- Late afternoonClimb out of the crater for a last view from the rim, then drive back to Arusha.
