About Materuni
Why go to Materuni
A Chagga village on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, a waterfall in the forest, and coffee you pick, roast and grind yourself. A favourite day after a climb or before a safari.
Materuni sits above Moshi among banana and coffee farms. A local guide leads the walk through the village to a tall waterfall in the forest, where you can swim if you don’t mind cold water.
Back in the village, a Chagga family shows how coffee goes from cherry to cup, and you roast and grind your own. Several of our safaris add this day at the end, and it works on its own as a day trip from Moshi or Arusha.

The waterfall
Materuni waterfall drops about 80 m into a cold pool in the forest on Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes.
The walk through Materuni village, among coffee and banana farms, is moderate: about 300 m of ascent and roughly 8 km there and back, with views of Kilimanjaro on clear days.
Make a day of it
Swim in the pool, eat a traditional Chagga lunch, and finish at a coffee farm where you follow the bean from cherry to cup.
