About Kilimanjaro
Why go to Kilimanjaro
Africa’s highest mountain, 5,895 m, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. You can climb it with no technical skills, or walk its lower slopes in a day.
Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano in north-eastern Tanzania, rising nearly 4,900 m above the plains around it. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, the highest, with Uhuru Peak on its crater rim; Mawenzi (5,149 m); and Shira (4,005 m). Mawenzi and Shira are extinct; Kibo is dormant.
Climbers pass through five zones on the way up: farmland and savannah, rainforest, heath, moorland, and the cold alpine desert near the summit. The summit glaciers are shrinking as the climate warms.
We climb with qualified mountain guides and a full crew. Choose a longer route for better acclimatisation, and come fit: the climb is a long walk at altitude, not a technical ascent.

Routes to the summit
- Lemosho, 7–8 days, about 70 km, moderate: the most scenic start, on the western slopes, with good acclimatisation and fewer people. Can be muddy in the rains.
- Machame, 6–7 days, about 62 km, challenging: the “Whiskey Route”, steeper and busier, with great views.
- Marangu, 5–6 days, about 58 km, the gentlest gradient: the “Coca-Cola Route”, the only one with huts instead of tents. Less scenic and often busy.
- Rongai, 6–7 days, about 70 km, moderate: the only route from the north, quieter, with a chance of wildlife.
- Northern Circuit, 8–9 days, about 88 km, moderate: the newest and longest, remote and very scenic, with the best acclimatisation.
Before you climb
Train for long walking days, take your time to acclimatise, and climb with a qualified guide. Kilimanjaro National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; elephants, leopards and buffalo live in its lower forests.

FAQs
How hard is it to climb Kilimanjaro?
There is no technical climbing, but days are long and the altitude is the real challenge. Summit night, from the high camp to Uhuru Peak and back down, takes about 12 to 14 hours.
Which route should I choose?
Lemosho (7–8 days) for the best acclimatisation and fewer people; Machame (6–7 days) for great scenery; Marangu for huts instead of tents; Rongai, from the north, for a quieter climb.
Can I see Kilimanjaro without climbing it?
Yes. Our Kilimanjaro day hike walks the Marangu Route to Mandara Hut and back, and the Materuni waterfall walk has views of the summit on clear days.
